Since Melbourne is pretending to have a summer, we may as well go along with the joke and have a look at some of the most mouthwatering ice cream and gelato in town.

Scroll
After packing up their Windsor pop-up, Scroll has made their permanent home in Chaddie. This Thai-inspired cold plate ice creamery offers preservative-free ice cream presented in (what else?) scrolls. Vegans can also get in on this with vegan and gluten-free options made with a coconut cream base. In fact, they even offer a post-workout option where they’ll blend protein powder into your scroll. Flavors to try include Minion-inspired Banana (banana Nutella ice cream) topped with Minion shaped biscuits and Nutter Butter (a combination of Tim Tams, Nutella, and peanut butter).

N2 Extreme Gelato
For ice cream nerds who like their dessert with a dash of science you can’t go wrong with N2 Gelato. All their gelato is created using liquid nitrogen but not to worry it’s perfectly safe! The only hazard may be to your waistline. They don’t offer fat-free or skinny options, but when the gelato they serve is that good (and when it comes with a syringe of Nutella) who’s complaining? Their menu is constantly changing and sometimes they offer some exotic options. But let’s be honest, it’s one of those places where you know you’ll never be disappointed.

Dex2Rose
What can we say? Nitrogen gelato is so cool that it can’t help but take out another slot on our list and with hilarious names like Salty Camel (salted caramel gelato made with in house caramel, topped with caramel popcorn, nut clusters, sugar shards, and their small batch salted caramel sauce) and Big ‘O’ cheesecake (OREOS in a rich CHEESECAKE gelato topped with more Oreo cookies and paired with a dark chocolate-Earl Grey ganache syringe) this place is a total win. Bonus points for their healthier Pina Colada and Starwberry Watermelon option and massive points for their Charcoal Chocolate Chip Belgian Waffles that comes with a hefty gelato serving.

Grand Trailer Park
Grand Trailer Park is known for their delish burgers, but give their waffle stack a shot! It’s definitely a new twist on a regular old ice cream sandwich. Peanut butter parfait sandwiched between two pieces of house made crisp waffle and topped with whipped cream, fresh strawberries, and salted caramel sauce. It’s a generous serving and we recommend sharing one with a friend as you enjoy their outdoor seating area overlooking Bourke St. If you’re feeling particularly naughty or have brought more than one friend along, get their Giant Waffle Stack that comes with your own personal little jar of Nutella to take home.

Pidapipo
Next up is beloved gelateria on Lygon Street, Pidapipo. Trust the Italians to know their gelato. You can expect a 10-20 minute wait on perfect warm and balmy nights. However, it is definitely worth the wait with their incredible list of milk based, dairy-free, and new formaggio based flavors! Make sure to try their Nutella gelato. These guys have Nutella on tap! More adventurous foodies can explore their new cheese gelatos. Personally, you can’t go wrong with their Parmesan, Fig, and Honey. It may sound a little strange, but it’s absolutely delicious!

Gelato Messina
We were a little miffed when Sydney was having all the fun so thank goodness Messina joined the Melbourne ice cream family last year. Boasting 35 flavors, the biggest problem won’t be beating the heat it’ll be choosing a flavour. Decadent gelato eaters can look forward to over a handful of chocolate options, while the calorie-conscious can choose from a couple of yoghurt-based gelato. A quick way to cool down is their refreshing Coconut & Lychee gelato, but we’ve got to recommend trying at least 1 flavor from their 5 weekly specials because once it’s gone who knows when you’ll see it again? And handy hint, check out their Instagram page each day to learn which drool worthy flavour is the one for the day! Grab your favorite gelato from any of their 3 branches in Fitzroy, Windsor, or Richmond.
