It’s that time of the year where winter is at it’s chilliest and we wrap our coziest scarves around our neck just a little (okay, a lot) tighter. In order to beat the winter blues, we’ve handpicked 13 of Melbourne’s best events this month. So whether you want to feast on truffles, sweat it out with Fury Yoga or embrace the cold, we’ve got your July sorted.
FOOD & DRINK
Blackstar Pastry Farewell Party (July 2)
The creators of Sydney’s Insta-famous strawberry watermelon cake are wrapping up their Melbourne stint with a bang. Teaming up with the city’s best Filipino pop-up, this unlikely collaboration will bring together exotic dishes and unique flavours at Carlton’s Café Italia. Expect all your favourite Blackstar pastries with a side of Cebu-style lechon, crispy crackling and chicken adobo courtesy of Hoy Pinoy.
Truffle and Charcuterie Celebration (July 9)
We know, we know, we just kicked off truffle season with a weekend-long Truffle Festival –but this one is for those Southside. On for one day only, Prahran Market is celebrating all things truffle and charcuterie. Expect truffle Cacio e Pepe, scallops topped with truffle butter and truffled chocolate waffle doughnuts.
Brewing for Beginners – Craft & Co. (July 27)
Sure we all love a good pint, but if you’re ready to try your hand at crafting then this is the class for you. On July 27, Craft & Co. will be teaching future brewers the basics of home brewing and bottling. Oh, and did we mention there’ll also be matched tastings with charcuterie and cheese?
Fury Yoga (July 7)
Fury Yoga is taking over Bar Open and serving up some powerful vinyasa yoga with a side of attitude. It’s the perfect outlet to release any pent up anger and stress. And if all those downward dogs and warrior poses don’t do the trick, we promise the FREE pot of beer at the end of class will.
ART & CULTURE
Van Gogh and The Seasons (July 1 – 12)
If you’ve been living under a rock, the NGV has been playing host to Van Gogh and The Seasons for the last few months. Keen to catch the exhibition for one last time? The NGV is holding a one-off 24-hour viewing for the very last weekend before these masterpieces are flown back home on July 12.
Bastille French Festival (July 15 – 16)
Back for it’s 3rd year, the Bastille French Festival is bringing the best of France to Melbourne. On for one weekend only, dress in red, white and blue and head to the Meat Market to celebrate Bastille Day. There are plenty of French products and food & drink to taste and sample and Francophiles will love the many workshops, masterclasses and exhibitions on offer.
Gertrude Street Projection Festival (July 21 – 30)
The Gertrude Street Projection Festival turns 10 this year! So it’s only fitting that the famed Gertrude Street in Fitzroy will be transformed into a light and projection outdoor hub for 10 days. From dusk to midnight, projection art from international and local artists will illuminate every nook and cranny. There will also be workshops, live music and entertainment.
Etsy x Art Series Hotels (July 2, 8, 9 & 15)
Etsy is teaming up with four Art Series hotels – The Olsen, The Blackman, The Larwill Studio and The Cullen for the most luxurious crafting session. Etsy creatives will lead classes in everything from chunky merino wool knitting to mastering watercolour. You’re welcome to drop by for just a class or pair it with an overnight stay to be even more inspired by Australia’s greatest artists.
Open House Melbourne (July 29 – 30)
Can you believe that Open House Melbourne has been unlocking the best of Melbourne’s iconic and heritage buildings and institutions for the last decade? This year, they’re giving architecture and design buffs a behind the scenes look in over 200 of the city’s buildings. 84 new buildings have been added, with highlights including the FREE Metro Tunnel Walking Tour, the new RMIT New Academic Street project and the Russell Place Substation.
Skate, Slide, Chill (June 1 – August 31)
For the entire winter season, The Common Man is being transformed into a winter wonderland. There’s an undercover ice rink, toboggan slide and gourmet pies, hotdogs and doughnuts to indulge our inner child, but there are also Absolut winter cocktails to satisfy our adult selves. They’re also doing themed nights like Half-Off Monday, Date Night Thursday and R&B Friday.
Melbourne Ice Slide (July 1 – 16)
Variety and Eureka Sky Deck’s ever-popular Ice Slide is making its return to Southbank. On for the first three weeks in July, the 4-meter high and 40-meter long slide will be kept at a chilly -12 degrees for maximum slip and slide and maximum fun. So what are you waiting for? Bundle up in your coziest winter gear, grab an ice tube and get ready to race down the Melbourne Ice Slide.
River Rink (July 1 – 23)
After last year’s success, River Rink is back in Fed Square. On for only 3 weeks, don’t miss out on skating with a stunning dual view of the Yarra River and Melbourne skyline. And if you need to refuel post-skate, there’ll be a selection of winter-themed food and drink to choose from.
