Melbourne Opera presents Roberto Devereux

saturday

Following the sold out triumphs of Maria Stuarda (Mary Stuart) in 2015 and Anna Bolena (Anne Boleyn) in 2016, Melbourne Opera will round out the year with the final instalment of Donezetti’s Tudor Trilogy, Robert Devereux.

Australian soprano Rosamund Illing wears the crown as one of the greatest roles ever written for an experienced diva, Queen Elizabeth I. Though the title may suggest otherwise, make no mistake – Roberto Devereux is very much a vehicle for a star soprano who has the notes.

Suzanne Chaundy directs and Greg Hocking and Raymond Lawrence conduct the superb Melbourne Opera Chorus and Orchestra.

Based very loosely on the career of the Earl of Essex, Robert Devereux, Donizetti and his librettist Salvatore Cammarano created for the opera a version of the eternal quadrilateral.
